During the summer of 2011, I played a series of weekly open mic shows at the Shillelagh Tavern, going by the handle X-Ray Ultra. I had come up with the name several years before as the title of my one-person band/production company. This was right after I had finished my first album: Disillusionment for Rockstars.
It starts out a bit mellow, with an out-of-tune Nirvana cover song, but I quickly became accustomed to playing guitar in a live setting. It's interesting for me to watch my confidence and skills grow over the course of a few months.
When the first Occupy Wall Street protest sprung up in downtown Manhattan that September, me and a few of my Shillelagh friends went there to join in. For about two months, we all lived at this encampment in Zuccotti Park, creating and organizing the infamous Occupy drum circle with a few other musicians. Unfortunately, I lost my old laptop at the protest, which had contained many hours of extra footage from Shillelagh and other events.
